Future Biomedical Scientist Summer Programme
Explore biomedical science through hands-on laboratory work, research, and the journey from scientific discovery to clinical application.
Inside Biomedical Science
Behind every medical advance is the science that made it possible.
Over two weeks at Imperial College London, you'll work alongside biomedical researchers and laboratory scientists to learn real bench techniques and explore how discoveries at the molecular level change lives. You'll extract DNA, run a Western blot, prepare and stain biological samples for microscopy, interpret biomedical images, and work through the drug development pipeline from laboratory to patient. You'll visit a working research facility and see how professional science operates from the inside. Every session is delivered by working scientists, not teachers.
The programme concludes with the ProEd Field Project, a group research project designed to strengthen university applications, presented to external professionals. You leave with a ProEd certificate, a written Field Project report, and professional panel feedback.
Key highlights
Hands-on laboratory experience
Develop practical laboratory skills and gain experience using techniques and methods found in biomedical research.
Explore biomedical research
Investigate scientific questions, design experiments, and understand how researchers build evidence through practical investigation.
Work with scientific data
Analyse and interpret experimental results, developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills used in biomedical science.
From discovery to application
Explore how biomedical research develops from laboratory investigation towards discoveries with potential clinical applications.

The ProEd Field Project
The programme concludes with a research-based Field Project, giving students the opportunity to bring together what they have learned and investigate a biomedical question in greater depth.
Your research project
Develop a research project with professional guidance, bringing together the question, evidence and methodology in a written report and final presentation.
How it’s supervised
Work with professional mentors to develop the project, refine the research approach, prepare the written report and rehearse for the final presentation.
Example: Develop a biomedical research question, design an investigation from hypothesis to methodology, and present the final project to a panel of external life sciences professionals for feedback.
